Chapter Sixteen

Scarlett

I’ll never understand men’s fascination with bodily functions and fluids. I already knew this, but the level of confirmation that I’ve just experienced is unprecedented.

Latham manages to sneak his cup out of the SUV without incident once we reach the airport and quietly disposes of it. It’s a relief to breathe fresh air again. I wasn’t sure I’d survive the trip without burning my sinus passages beyond repair. I haven’t even been on a date with either one of them, and I’ve already endured the aftermath of IBS and an impromptu urine sample.

I can’t believe this is my life right now, and I’ve never been more excited to get on a plane.

“Take care!” Craig waves from the open passenger window of the vehicle. “Please put in a good word for me with your boss, okay!”

Latham grins and gives the guy two thumbs up. “You got it! Thanks for everything!”

I can’t imagine that he’ll be asked to return the SUV—even if Dante tried to make him take it back, one good sniff of its post-gas, fart-filled, hot mess interior should be enough to convince the dealership to let him keep it.

As we head toward our gate, Latham nods to my new bag. “What’s that?”

“A gift from Mrs. Anderson,” I tell him.

“Is it cookies?” His eyes turn into moons, and his smile cannot be contained. How did I ever hate this man? He’s basically an oversized golden retriever who isn’t quite fully housebroken.

I hold it close. “We’ll see when we get on the plane.”

Sadly, it’s a different plane than the last one, and Max is nowhere in sight. I would love to tell him how much of a difference a day makes and thank him for that little boost of confidence that seems to have done the trick. Instead, we’re greeted by the pilot and copilot.

“Sorry about this, folks,” the pilot says. She’s an older woman, with a mix of silver and gray in her otherwise black bob. She nods to the copilot, an Asian-American man in his mid-thirties. “It’s just Mark and me today. A lot of people are stranded on account of the storm. And since this jet has less than nineteen seats, we’re not required by law to have a flight attendant on board. I hope that won’t be a problem.”

“It’s fine.” Latham flaps one hand to wave off their concerns. “I promise we can find the pretzels ourselves.”

The two of them relax slightly. I doubt that they were worried about us causing mayhem so much as pitching a fit. Something tells me that Dante isn’t exactly gracious when things don’t go his way.

Left to our own devices, Latham and I settle in the little nook by the bar. The layout of the plane is pretty similar to the jet we left Vegas in, although some of the details are different.

“Now can we see what’s in the bag?” Latham asks, already reaching for the handles.

I shoo him away and reach in myself, pushing the pajamas inside. To hear Mrs.
